From peaches and tomatoes, to meat and milk: food security in Albania in times

Albanians are being poisoned by banned pesticides...

Food security in the country is at its worst. Despite Rama's talk of reform, the merger of the National Food Agency, and market actions, the reality is very clear: every product consumed in the country is unknown in terms of its content.

After the scandals with chicken, milk, or strawberries and tangerines, today another affair has erupted. Peaches and tomatoes produced here are drowned in pesticides. Croatia and Bosnia have blocked tons of peaches and tomatoes from our country, as they have high levels of pesticides and nickel.

Specifically, on August 22, 2025, Croatia destroyed 5 tons of peaches produced in Divjakë after high levels of the heavy metal nickel were discovered. Just a few days later, on August 30, the same country announced the burial of 4 tons of Albanian tomatoes, which were found to have been sprayed with a level five times higher than the permitted level of the toxic substance chlorfenapyr.

But if we go back, the food scandals this year are endless. At the beginning of this year, a similar scandal occurred with tangerines. It was Croatia that blocked over 10 tons of tangerines, as they contained high levels of pesticides. The scandal deepened, because they were dumped on the Albanian market and an investigation by the prosecutor's office resulted in over 20 tons. The same thing seems to happen with peaches, where Albanians will eventually eat them.

In May, in a state kindergarten in Gramsh, nearly 70 children were poisoned due to salmonella in eggs.

At the end of March, it was discovered that about 8 tons of chicken meat from Brazil, with a high salmonella content, was traded in our country. The meat managed to be put on the market and was all consumed. The authorities acted very late, while irresponsibility was also shown by the company that brought the meat, avoiding obligations.

Also, months ago, a scandal erupted at the KFC chain, after the chicken they were serving was found to contain salmonella. In this case too, there was no destruction and no taking of responsibility by anyone, but the food was consumed.

It also turned out that the milk sold in the country also contains aflatoxins. Two well-known companies (Lufra and Erzeni) were found to be selling milk with dangerous content. No one took care of its disposal, but all of it was consumed by citizens.

This is not the only case, as there have been other reports of aflatoxin in milk, not to mention the mixing with powdered milk. Albania imported 1,000 tons of powdered milk from abroad. Meanwhile, it has imported over 3,000 tons of palm oil, another product that compromises food safety if not used properly.

A short while ago, the Ministry of Agriculture admitted to the media that during 2024 alone, laboratory analyses in fruits and vegetables found 7 banned pesticides such as: "chlorpyriphos, chlorfenapyr, chlorpyriphos methyl, linuron, dimethoate, myclobutanil and omethoate". These are pesticides that Europe bans, but are freely used in Albania. And in fact, all of them are poisons for the Albanians' bodies. /Pamphlet
