The food safety scandals in Albania are not over. After the case of peaches banned by Croatia and Bosnia due to pesticides, another shipment of agricultural products from Albania has become an international alarm. This time, it is about Albanian tomatoes, filled with pesticides above the allowed norms, which were buried by the Croatian authorities.
On August 22, 2025, Croatia destroyed 5 tons of peaches produced in Divjakë after high levels of the heavy metal nickel were detected. Just a few days later, on August 30, the same country announced the burial of 4 tons of Albanian tomatoes, which were found to have been sprayed with a level five times higher than the permitted level of the toxic substance chlorfenapyr.
According to the official report of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), tomatoes originating from Berat contained 0.06 mg/kg of this pesticide, while the allowed rate is only 0.01 mg/kg. These products have been classified as hazardous to health and have been destroyed at the border.
Furthermore, the EU's rapid alert system for food safety (RASFF) has officially confirmed the Albanian origin of the contaminated products.
These scandals seriously question the efficiency of the AKU and internal controls in Albania. While the government is promoting “agricultural reforms” and support for exports, it is foreign countries that are stopping the poisoning of their citizens with Albanian products. No reaction so far from Albanian institutions. Total silence.
