Altin Dumani, head of SPAK, was received yesterday in Washington by senior US State Department official Brendan P. Hanrahan, representative of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. The meeting was seen as a strong signal of support and a clear message for the uncompromising continuation of investigations into high-level corruption in Albania.
Regarding this visit, lawyer Spartak Ngjela has reacted. In a direct and ironic post, he criticizes Berisha and underlines the necessity of concrete results from SPAK.
" Now that Dumani, as a powerful prosecutor, has been summoned to Washington; what provincial fantasy will Berisha express to us? No, the more accurate question is: What will SPAK do against high state corruption and organized crime in Albania? ", writes Ngjela.
This development comes at a time when SPAK has intensified investigations and is expected to announce important decisions on matters of high public sensitivity. The visit to the US can be interpreted as a “political and institutional charge” for Dumani, at a time when justice institutions are under pressure from public opinion to move forward with investigations without stopping in the face of big names.
