Egypt have made history at the World Cup by winning a knockout match for the first time in their history at the tournament. The African team triumphed 4-2 on penalties over Australia in a match in Dallas that ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
With this success, the "Pharaohs" secure qualification for the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between reigning champions Argentina and the surprise of the tournament, Cape Verde.
The Kangaroos started the match better, creating the first chances with Christian Volpaton and Jordan Bos, but without finding the net. In contrast, Egypt proved more efficient and took the lead in the 13th minute. Karim Hafez curled a shot from the left wing, while Emam Ashur headed home for a 1-0 score.
During the first half, Egypt managed the game better, kept control of the ball and created more chances, even though Mohamed Salah was kept out of the danger zone by the Australian defense.
Just seconds into the second half, Omar Marmush missed a brilliant opportunity to double his lead. Australia responded and equalized thanks to an own goal by Mohamed Hani, who deflected a free kick into his own net.
Both teams then had chances to score the winning goal. Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach made a crucial save on Rami Rabia's header, while Harry Shutar cleared the ball over the line in another dangerous opportunity for Egypt. Mohamed Salah also came close, but his shot went over the crossbar.
Even extra time did not change the result. Australia brought on veteran Matthew Ryan shortly before the end of the game, with the aim of better coping with the penalty shootout.
From the penalty spot, Egypt proved unerring. Harry Shutar missed the first penalty for the Australians, while Mohamed Salah calmly completed a "Panenka". Then, a mistake by 18-year-old Lukas Herrington paved the way for Hosam Abdelmaguid, who scored the decisive penalty and sealed the 4-2 victory.
This triumph ensures Egypt a historic qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup, marking an important moment in the history of Egyptian football.
