Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that he will not decide on his future with the national team until the end of the World Cup, stressing that his current focus is on the tournament.
The 41-year-old contributed to Portugal's qualification to the round of 16, after scoring from the penalty spot in a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Thursday in Toronto.
Asked about reports in the Portuguese media that he may retire from the national team after this World Cup, the Al Nassr striker said that the decision will only be made after the tournament is over.
" The future is not important now. I will talk about it later. After the tournament is over, whether with victory or defeat, I will talk to my family and then I will make a decision. I no longer make hasty decisions, now I analyze everything calmly. For now I just want to enjoy this day ," Ronaldo told "Sport TV".
Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer in international football history, with 146 goals in 232 appearances for Portugal since his debut in 2003.
This is the sixth World Cup in his career, while the big goal remains winning the only major trophy still missing from his collection.
The Portuguese captain was substituted in the 81st minute and watched anxiously from the bench as Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time. Croatia scored late on, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
" Football is like that. To win a competition of this level you have to learn to suffer. It was a very exciting match for the fans. We controlled the first half well, while the second half was more chaotic. We had difficulties, but that's the nature of the competition - you have to keep going ," Ronaldo concluded.
