Prime Minister Edi Rama has harshened his tone towards protesters and activists who oppose the planned project in the Zvërnec and Sazan areas, accusing them of manipulation, speculation and damage to the country's tourist image.
In a public reaction, Rama referred to the meeting he held with residents of the area, claiming that their position is different from what, according to him, is being presented in the media and social networks.
According to Rama, residents in Zvërnec are concerned about the future of the project and do not oppose it.
"This week I went and met with the residents of the Zvërnec area, in a meeting that, for all those who want to listen, is posted on my page. It is worth much more than any screaming, any noise, any whining, any concern, manipulation, falsification or speculation from the scum of the last few days.
There I met people who were insulted, massacred by online flamingos as people who were gathered with difficulty, as people who were gathered piecemeal, as people who did not represent the community, etc., while they are the people who live in that area. That area is not an overpopulated area. It is an area where those people who have interests there, who work there, who claim their properties there, even where the project will be developed, who support their families from small activities there, from services and from daily work there, are them.
I didn't go to meet people gathered from Narta down below or from Vlora up above. I went to meet those who are there, precisely those who have a direct interest, whether in property rights, whether in the right to be heard, whether in the right to be participants in this process, whether in the right to develop. Okay?
And what I heard from them was of course not a surprise to me. It was completely different from what you hear every day. It was a conversation about concrete concerns, about concrete problems, about how to address a claim, a property returned and registered, but that, in the event that the return and registration were done irregularly, there is a court, there is a process and in the end everything was positive between people who discuss like people, between people who do not throw stones at each other. Okay?
And what impressed me the most was that, despite the questions, concerns, and demands they had, at no point did I hear them question the very idea that this investment should be stopped. On the contrary, I felt concern even later when we left; I felt concern that: "Oh, don't stop, oh, let's not lose this thing," Rama said.
Part of his statement also focused on the impact that, according to the Prime Minister, the protests are having on the tourism sector. He warned that the public debate and the image created on social media could negatively affect tourism bookings.
"This normal crowd turning into hundreds of thousands of people boiling in Albania will damage tourism, guys, girls. Some worrying signs of deregistrations have begun in Saranda, some worrying signs, a little, but before it becomes a trend for those who have booked to come to start, that is, to bring that money that will go to small businesses, that will go to families who are eagerly awaiting this season, then we will lose many tourists this year," Rama said.
He also mocked the protesters, saying that some of them have no connection to the area and that many of those protecting flamingos have never seen them up close.
"Maybe this is the goal, to live only with flamingos, which 99.99 percent of those who protect them have never seen with their own eyes," he declared.
At the end of the reaction, Rama gave a clear message that the government has no intention of withdrawing from the investment.
"While the project will be done, to be very clear. The project will be done because it is a great good for our economy. It is a great blessing for Vlora and it is a great epochal leap for Albania as a tourist and for European Albania," said the prime minister.
