London archives have revealed for the first time the exact location of the home of renowned playwright William Shakespeare.
Researcher Lucy Munro from King's College London found a plan from 1668, which reveals not only the position, but also the size and structure of the apartment in the historic area of Blackfriars.
"It was a really pleasant surprise ," she said, explaining that the information came to light when she found a plan of the district, dating from 1668, while researching a project on local theatres at the London Archives.
The house appears to have been L-shaped, partly over a gateway, and surrounded by other buildings such as the “Sign of the Cock” tavern. It was large enough to be divided into two residential units.
The discovery sheds light on Shakespeare's life in the years before his death in 1616 at the age of 52, challenging the idea that he had retreated from London after the burning of the Globe Theatre in 1613.
According to researchers, the purchase of this property near the theater indicates that he continued to be active in professional life in the capital.
