Iran proposes that Trump and Pezeshkian sign the deal in person

Iran's Foreign Ministry has said that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump may personally sign the memorandum of understanding between the two countries. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the idea had been proposed and was still under consideration. He added that there had been no change in Iran's plans to attend the official signing ceremony expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday. The statement was carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The agreement comes after a period of high tensions between the two countries, including the US naval blockade and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz that affected global oil supplies. The memorandum provides for the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz duty-free, the easing of sanctions on Iran depending on implementation, as well as 60 days of talks on the nuclear issue and a more sustainable peace.

Senior US officials have read the contents of the agreement to reporters, confirming key details. The virtual signing was carried out earlier by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian representatives, while the official physical ceremony is scheduled for Friday in Switzerland. The Iranian proposal for a personal signature by the two presidents is seen as a symbolic step to give more weight to the agreement and to show higher-level commitment. However, there is still no official confirmation from the US side whether Trump will physically attend.

The deal was brokered with the help of countries like Pakistan and Qatar. It aims to end the recent conflict, ease regional tensions, and pave the way for gradual normalization. Despite the optimism, there are skeptics on both sides. Critics in the US see it as a concession, while in Iran they emphasize the need for concrete guarantees.

Spokesman Baghaei stressed that Iran remains committed to the process. Friday's ceremony is expected to be watched with great international attention, as it will have a direct impact on global energy markets and stability in the Middle East. The development represents a significant diplomatic turnaround after months of tensions, but full implementation will depend on the next steps during the 60-day nuclear talks.
