The European Council will hold a strategic discussion on the enlargement of the European Union and related reforms at its meeting scheduled for October 2026. The decision was announced following the European Council summit held on 18-19 June in Brussels.
According to the statement published by the European Council, this discussion will take place in the context of the new momentum that the enlargement process has gained and with reference to the Granada Declaration.
For the Western Balkans, the European Council welcomed the holding of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat, Montenegro on 5 June 2026, assessing that it contributed to further promoting the enlargement process.
The European Council reiterated that the European Union will continue to cooperate closely with the Western Balkan countries and support their reform efforts on the path towards EU membership.
The statement also emphasizes that the EU remains committed to advancing gradual integration between the Union and the region during the enlargement process itself, based on merit and in a reversible approach, in line with the progress of each candidate country.
