The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced that Israeli troops will continue to remain and operate in southern Lebanon even during the ceasefire period with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group.
Israeli army spokeswoman Effie Defrin said Israel would continue military activities in the area and accused Hezbollah of launching hundreds of rockets and explosive drones against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
The statement comes after the IDF announced earlier that four Israeli soldiers were killed and five others were injured during a drone strike in southern Lebanon.
According to Israeli authorities, the latest offensive in Lebanon began after Hezbollah carried out rocket and drone attacks on Israel on March 2, shortly after the outbreak of war with Iran.
Israel claims the Lebanese group acted in revenge for the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader.
In the current conflict, Israel has deployed troops to southern Lebanon with the aim of creating a “buffer zone” along the border. Israeli authorities argue that this measure is necessary after rocket attacks by Hezbollah forced thousands of northern Israelis to flee their homes.
Although the ceasefire aims to reduce tensions in the region, recent statements by the Israeli military suggest that the military presence in southern Lebanon will continue to remain part of Israel's security strategy.
