US President Donald Trump announced that no tariffs will be imposed on passage through the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire period, while warning that the US could apply tariffs later if a final agreement is not reached.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump stated that during the ceasefire period there will be no fees or charges for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime corridors for the transport of oil and goods.
" There will be no tariffs in the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days during the ceasefire period ," the US president wrote.
He added that after the end of this period, tariffs will not be imposed, unless the United States decides to apply them if the agreement is not finalized.
According to Trump, any potential tariffs would be related to compensating for the costs that, according to him, the US has incurred in ensuring security in the Middle East.
In the same post, the US president described Washington as a "guardian angel" for countries in the region, arguing that the United States has provided support and security for decades.
The statement comes at a time of heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran warned of the possibility of restricting navigation in this strategic corridor. Meanwhile, US authorities have stated that maritime traffic in the area continues normally and that US forces remain present to ensure the safety of navigation.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean and is considered one of the most important arteries of global energy trade. A large portion of the world's oil exports pass through this sea route every day, making any development in the area directly impact international markets.
