Spain's qualification to the World Cup semi-finals has created a complicated situation for the La Liga calendar. Although the Spanish championship is scheduled to start on August 14, the workload of the players with national teams and contractual obligations has forced the organizers to postpone the first week of the season.
According to the collective agreement of the AFE (Spanish Footballers' Association), each player must take 21 days of compulsory rest between two seasons. This means that players involved in the final stages of the World Cup will not be available for the first matches of the championship.
Initially, La Liga had decided to postpone only two matches: Barcelona-Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid-Real Sociedad, as these teams have the largest number of players on international duty. However, Spain's success has changed plans.
The Celta Vigo-Osasuna and Atletico Madrid-Malaga matches have already been postponed due to players involved with the Spanish national team. Valencia-Betis and Sevilla-Rajo Vallecano are also at risk, and could suffer the same fate.
If the situation remains unchanged, only four matches will be able to take place on the weekend of August 14: Alaves-Getafe, Deportivo La Coruña-Elche, Espanyol-Levante and Racing Santander-Villarreal.
For this reason, the idea is gaining ground that the entire first week of La Liga be postponed and take place between the second and third weeks of the championship, specifically on August 26 or 27. This possibility has also been accepted by La Liga president Javier Tebas, who is considering alternatives to avoid a fragmented start to the season.
