Cardiologist raises alarm: Hypertension is affecting 18-19 year olds, factors

High blood pressure is no longer just affecting the elderly. According to doctors, in recent years, cases of hypertension have increased significantly among young people, and patients have even been identified as young as 18-19 years old.

Cardiologist Taulant Gishto states that hypertension has become a common disease in all age groups, while underlining that the main factors are related to lifestyle.

"Hypertension has now become a disease known to everyone, it is a chronic disease that affects all ages. The youngest ages we have are even 18-19 years old with hypertension, which was previously considered taboo. Ages under 30 are now common in visits," said Gishto.

According to him, among the factors that have influenced the increase in cases are a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy nutrition, consumption of high-calorie foods, and the use of narcotic substances.

"The use of drugs, mainly cocaine and heroin, affects through mechanisms that increase peripheral resistance and activate hypertension," the doctor told "Vizion Plus".

However, the cardiologist notes that citizens' awareness of periodic checkups has also increased, especially among young people.

He advises that during hot summer days, hours with high temperatures should be avoided, physical activity should be performed before 10:00 and after 17:00, while people with cardiovascular problems should stay in cool environments and take care of hydration.

According to data from the World Health Organization, about 47% of Albanians aged 30-79 suffer from high blood pressure, a figure higher than the global average of about 34%.
