Student from Macedonia asks Rama for a greater role for Albanians in the region...
A question from a student from North Macedonia has "embarrassed" Edi Rama. Focusing on the situation of Albanians there, she asked Edi Rama if he would dare to sit down with Albin Kurti as two brothers and talk to come up with a common position for Albanians. Her statement was made during a meeting with young people in Jalë.
Student Albana Elezi praised the support that official Tirana has provided over the years, but raised concern about the lack of a unified approach among Albanian leaders.
" Hello, Mr. Prime Minister. I am a student from North Macedonia. We cannot deny the support or endorsement of official Tirana, which has been an example to follow, however, official Pristina remained silent. My question is: will you have the courage to call Albin Kurti as a brother, sit down and talk together and maintain a common position? ", said the student.
She urged that political debates among Albanian leaders not affect issues related to the rights of Albanians in the region and called for a clear message for the future.
" Isn't it time to draw a red line for our rights once and for all? To end these debates among us and as young people to know clearly where we belong? We all say that only when we are together are we stronger. So today I am asking you with great sincerity: will you undertake to do this and if so, when will it happen? ", she said.
Her question also touched on the relations between Rama and Kurti, which in recent years have been accompanied by public clashes over regional issues and the manner of coordination between Albania and Kosovo.
In his response, Rama said that Albania must respect the institutions of other Albanian states and that he does not see the role of Tirana as an authority that should dictate decision-making.
" I have had my red line from the beginning. I do not begrudge anyone who has their own home. Kosovo has its own prime minister, it has its own institutions, and there was a time before I became prime minister, when Tirana told Kosovo what it had to do and went to Skopje and Tetovo to tell others what they had to do. These have been brutal years of regional politics, " Rama declared.
Speaking about Kurti, Rama said that despite political differences, there is a relationship of respect between them and that there is no exception to communication.
“Albinin gjithmonë e kam thënë, e takoj me shumë kënaqësi sepse na ecën muhabeti shumë mirë kur takohemi. Bëjmë shumë humor me njëri-tjetrin.
Studentja: Përshëndetje, i nderuar zoti Kryeministër. Ndaj unë sot po ju pyes me shumë sinqeritet, se a do të merrni përsipër ta bëni këtë?
What was called the Tirana Platform, which was actually a document agreed upon between all Albanian parties in Macedonia on what they had in common. So that whoever would propose to enter the government, would not be able to do the well-known technique of 'divide and rule'. So, no one would enter the government without getting a guarantee that those points of the document would not... that they would be considered by the proposing prime minister. This was the Tirana Platform, it worked at the time. It was not easy to sit everyone together at a table, one more Albanian than the other, and it became something very positive at that time. But I want to tell you that it was their request, it was not my instigation. I saw that they had this disposition and I said, okay come to Tirana, sit down and talk. And at first when they arrived, everyone was scattered in different points in the Prime Minister's building because they could not sit in one room with each other. They could not sit like that. Then, they all sat down together. And that was something very positive. But that, and ah, something else. I have not had... I have a friendship that I do not deny, I am proud of that friendship for historical reasons, personal as you like with Ali Ahmeti. But no one can say and cannot support with facts that I have ever interfered in the campaign in North Macedonia, that I have ever done anything to favor one and attack the other, far from it.
I have always been respectful because I believe that this is the best way to help them. As for Kosovo, Kosovo is another country. Kosovo is not a province of Albania, in the sense that it does not depend on Albania, it is another country, it has its own institutions. So, I have always told Albin, I meet him with great pleasure because our conversation goes very well when we meet. And we have a lot of humor with each other. If there was a camera to see when I meet with Albin, the whole world would be surprised. But we are not in a position where I can say 'you come here', he no and no. So, we have mutual respect, but each has his own country, his own government, his own mind. Fortunately, we have common goals, our methods are different. We are two different people and there is no problem
