The clash between Meloni and Trump has turned into an open public debate, after the US president accused the Italian prime minister of trying to use him to boost her popularity. Meloni responded by inviting Trump to deal with his own popularity and emphasizing that Italy does not sacrifice its sovereignty for anyone.
The clash between the two former friends continues. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has responded in harsh tones to US President Donald Trump, following his recent attacks on the social network Truth Social, describing his statements as unjustified and unworthy of relations between Western allies.
In a response published in English, Meloni said that Trump's constant accusations have no basis and do not serve the unity of the West.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the support she enjoys in Italy stems from her ability to defend national interests and not from personal relationships with foreign leaders.
"President Trump, these continuous and unprovoked attacks make no sense. As for my popularity, being friends with you certainly has not helped me and does not depend in any way on my relationship with you. My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy's national interest and I have always done so, including on the issue of the use of US military bases in Italy. These bases are governed by agreements that have always been respected and cannot be violated as long as I am prime minister. Italy remains a sovereign country," Meloni declared.
She concluded the reaction with a direct message to the American president: "My popularity does not belong to you. I suggest you focus on yours."

Meloni added that he will not return to this controversy, because he continues to believe in the unity of the West and does not consider this public clash to be at the level required by the responsibility of political leaders.
The clash erupted after Trump posted a message on Truth Social claiming that Meloni had repeatedly asked him to take pictures with her during the G7 summit in France. He said the Italian prime minister was trying to mend ties with him to boost her popularity in Italy.
Trump also criticized the Italian government's decision to deny the use of Italian airfields and military infrastructure during U.S. operations related to the conflict with Iran. He argued that this had created logistical difficulties for the United States, despite the American role in defending NATO allies.
The debate is linked to an episode that occurred in late March, when two American fighter jets flying from Scotland requested to use the Sigonella air base in Sicily. According to Italian media, the request was not approved because the agreements governing the use of American bases on Italian territory did not provide for such a possibility. Meloni has publicly defended the decision, arguing that it was in accordance with the law and with Italy's sovereignty.
The controversy between the two leaders began on Friday, when Trump claimed in an interview that Meloni had "begged" him for a photo during the G7 summit in Evian, France. The Italian prime minister immediately responded with a video, calling the claims completely untrue.
"I'm surprised. I don't understand why he behaves like this with allies. I'm sorry that Trump doesn't show the same determination towards the West's opponents. But he should remember one thing: Italy and I never pray," she declared.
According to Italian media, President Sergio Mattarella called Meloni to express his solidarity after Trump's public attacks. Meanwhile, concerns are growing in Rome that the clash between the two leaders could affect relations between Italy and the United States, two historic allies within NATO.
VIVA ITALIA!!! Fuck you Trump!!
