A train travelling from Corby to London collided with the rear of another train coming from Nottingham and travelling on the same line towards St Pancras station. The accident happened at around 5pm on Friday, south of Elstow Junction, near Bedford.
The collision caused at least one train car to derail, killing the driver of one of the trains.
According to updated figures from the East of England Ambulance Service, 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 32 others were seriously injured, while 56 people received minor injuries. In total, the number of injured reached 99.
British Transport Police chief Lucy D'Orsi said more than 80 people had been treated in hospital overnight. Currently, 28 people remain in hospital, with nine of them in a critical condition.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes in the immediate aftermath of the crash. One passenger, doctor Pete Knapp, said he saw people with life-threatening injuries, while many passengers were frightened and shaken.
Emergency services, including air ambulance helicopters, were called to the scene. Bedford and Luton & Dunstable hospitals urged people to avoid going to A&E unless it was a real emergency, to cope with the influx of injured people.
The accident involved two East Midlands Railway trains. According to preliminary data, a Class 360 train, in use for more than two decades, hit the rear of a newer Class 810 train, which had only entered service at the end of last year.
British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said a full and independent investigation would be carried out to determine the causes of the accident. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as "extremely worrying" and thanked the emergency services for their swift response.
Authorities have not yet provided an official explanation for the cause of the collision, while investigations continue.
