United States Vice President JD Vance has avoided comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a visit to Switzerland, where he is holding diplomatic meetings on issues related to Iran and the security situation in the region.
During a meeting with Pakistani mediators at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne, Vance thanked the delegation for participating in the talks but made no public statements to the media. He also did not answer a reporter's question about a message he had for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Vance's move comes at a delicate moment for relations between Washington and Tel Aviv, as recent developments in Lebanon and tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have affected diplomatic efforts related to Iran.
A day earlier, the US vice president acknowledged that the US and Israel may have different approaches to how the conflict in the region should end. He also stressed that President Donald Trump remains "the only leader in the world" who enjoys a close relationship with Israel under these circumstances.
Vance warned that any attack on allies could have consequences for strategic relations, while the talks in Switzerland are expected to focus on Iran, the situation in Lebanon and efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
The meetings are being followed with high diplomatic interest, as they take place at a time when the region is facing one of the most sensitive moments in recent years.
The Iranian delegation includes Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, and Deputy Oil Minister Hamid Bovard.
The American delegation led by Vice President JD Vance, along with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, welcomed Pakistani mediators led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.
