Residents tear down fences in Kakome: We will defend the lands of our ancestors

Tensions over ownership in Kakomë Bay have returned, after dozens of local residents and immigrants from Greece held a protest against the enclosure of the area that they consider land inherited from their ancestors.

During the rally, protesters removed the perimeter walls, fences and guard buildings, while two days earlier the gate at the entrance to the bay had also been removed. The action was described by participants as symbolic and in response to what they call the occupation of property.

Amid calls against land grabbing, protesters declared that they would not allow their properties to pass into the hands of oligarchs or politically favored investors.

"We will defend the lands of our ancestors with blood," was heard during the protest.

Residents, mainly from Nivica and the surrounding area, recalled that the legal battle over Kakomena has been ongoing since 2004, turning into one of the longest ownership conflicts in the south of the country.

According to them, administrative and legal processes for about 29 thousand hectares of land have remained unresolved for more than two decades, while they accused political forces of promising solutions without providing a final answer.

Protesters expressed disappointment with the institutions, but emphasized that they will not back down from their demand for full recognition of property rights.

They warned that the protests will continue until a legal and administrative solution is reached that, according to them, should recognize ownership of the lands they consider family heritage.
