Protesters with eyes on SPAK: launch investigation into Edi Rama and Sali

After a justice reform sold as the main guarantee, citizens in the square demand proof: if SPAK has real weight, the moment is now!

Among the thousands of citizens who once again filled the square in front of the Prime Minister's Office on the 22nd day of anti-government protests, one voice stood out not for its political language, but for its simplicity. A pensioner from the Vlora suburbs, who traveled four times to Tirana with his pension money, tonight asked the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime to open the files of two key figures in Albanian politics, Prime Minister Edi Rama and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

"I am neither a politician nor an orator and I do not know either Sali Berisha or Edi Rama, but hearing that the biggest criticisms about them are made by them themselves, SPAK should also intervene to take their files and provide solutions to these people ," he told News24.

His words encapsulate a sentiment that is becoming increasingly present in the square: the conviction that the solution no longer comes from the ballot box, but from justice. The protester himself put this in the most direct way, speaking about the trust he gave Rama with his vote and which, according to him, was later broken. "Rama says that 800 thousand Albanians voted for him; I gave him my vote, but I broke the contract with him, because he no longer answers to us as a people ," said the pensioner from Vlora.

For many of the citizens who have been filling the square for three weeks, the only institution that can still restore a bridge of trust between them and the state remains the new justice system, and at its center is SPAK. After a justice reform that was sold as the main guarantee that no official would be above the law, the citizens' expectations tonight were clear: if this structure is going to show that it has real weight, the moment to do so is now, while public trust in political institutions is at its lowest levels. The protesters' call is not partisan. They demand that justice treat both sides, Rama and Berisha, equally, without political considerations.

The pensioner's request from Vlora, stated without partisan rhetoric, is perhaps the purest message to come out of the pulpit these weeks: citizens are not looking for one side against the other, but for an institution that responds to everyone equally.
