Kylian Mbappe is set to reach another milestone in his career with France. The 27-year-old forward is set to make his 100th appearance for the Roosters in Monday's match against Iraq, cementing his status as one of the most important players in the history of the French national team.
" I remember his arrival in the French national team. He was a teenager, but a phenomenon for his age, a phenomenon in speed and efficiency ," said Guy Stephane, assistant coach Didier Deschamps, recalling Mbappe's debut on March 25, 2017, when he was just 18 years old.
Since then, the French striker has played 99 games for the national team, scoring 58 goals. This balance has placed him among the most important figures in French football and one of the main protagonists of his generation.
Mbappe has also left his mark at the World Cup. He has surpassed the record of the legendary Just Fontein, who had scored 13 goals in the World Cup, while he himself has 14 goals in the most prestigious football competition. The French striker is now closing in on Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose, who have both scored 16 goals in the final stages of the World Cup.
His debut for France came in a 3–1 win over Luxembourg on 25 March 2017. He played the last 15 minutes of that match, coming on as a substitute for Dimitri Payet. Just five matches later, on 31 August 2017, Mbappe scored his first goal for the national team in a 4–0 win over the Netherlands in Saint-Denis, in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
At the 2018 World Cup, where France won, Mbappe played in every match and scored four goals. Four years later, at Qatar 2022, he had another incredible tournament, scoring eight goals. Three of those came in the spectacular final against Argentina, which the Latin Americans won on penalties.
This season, Mbappe has scored two goals and remains the main point of reference for the French national team, which demands more from its captain on the path towards future goals.
With 99 appearances, Mbappe is now among the 10 most capped players in France history. Ahead of him are legendary names such as Didier Deschamps (103 matches), Patrick Vieira (107), Zinedine Zidane (108), Marcel Dezai (113), Thierry Henry (123), Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud (137 each), Lilian Thuram (142) and Hugo Loris (145), from whom he also inherited the captain's armband.
To date, Mbappe has accumulated 7,969 minutes for the national team and has started 84 matches. His statistics include 15 matches in three World Cups, nine matches in two European Championships, 29 World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, 21 appearances in the Nations League – a trophy he won in 2021 – as well as 25 friendlies.
At just 27 years old, Kylian Mbappe still has many chapters to write for France. The match against Iraq will be another milestone in a career that continues to be enriched with records and extraordinary achievements.
