The Netherlands national team has recorded its first victory at the 2026 World Cup, convincingly defeating Sweden 5-1 in the match held in Houston.
The "Tulips" started the match perfectly, taking the lead in the fifth minute. After a quick counterattack and a beautiful combination in the attacking phase, Brian Brobi took advantage of a ball served by Kodi Gakpo and sent it into the net for 1-0.
The Sunderland striker was the protagonist again in the 17th minute, when he scored his and his team's second goal, this time after an assist from Denzel Dumfries' right wing.
Sweden thought they had re-opened the game late in the first half with a header from Gustaf Lagerbielke, but the Scandinavians' celebration was short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside. The first half ended with the Netherlands leading 2-0.
The second half also started under the dominance of the "Tulips". Kodi Gakpo sealed the lead with two quick goals, scoring in the 49th and 54th minutes. Denzel Dumfries and Chrisensio Somerville contributed with assists to the goals.
Sweden managed to score the only goal in the 58th minute. Anthony Elanga led a quick counterattack, while Alexander Isak provided the decisive assist for the goal that temporarily narrowed the gap.
However, the final word went to the Netherlands. In the final minutes of normal time, Chrisencio Somerville scored the fifth goal after a beautiful move, finishing off an assist from Memphis Depay, with both players having come on from the bench during the second half.
With this resounding 5-1 victory, the Netherlands climbs to the top of Group F with four points. Meanwhile, the next group match between Tunisia and Japan will take place in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
