An unusual character is capturing the attention of thousands of fans during the 2026 World Cup in Mexico. It's Merlin, a two-year-old duck dressed in the green jersey of the Mexican national team, who has become one of the most beloved and talked-about figures of the tournament.
Her story began on the streets of Mexico City, when owner Karla Ivete Gomez was filmed walking Merlin by her side. The footage quickly spread on social media, and within days the duck gained popularity across the country.
Merlin's fame has also attracted the attention of sports institutions. FIFA has described her as a kind of "ambassador" for Mexico during the World Cup, while the Mexican national team released a symbolic image showing the duck flying over the Guadalajara stadium.
The number 12 jersey, a traditional symbol of the fans, has become her trademark. Merlin's popularity has reached such a point that bakeries in various parts of the country have started producing cakes with her image, while television shows invite her for sports "analysis".
However, her answer to every question about football remains unchanged: "quack, quack, quack."
In the historic "Bellas Artes" square, dozens of journalists and hundreds of citizens gather every day to see him up close. As soon as he arrives, visitors rush to take photos and videos, treating him like a celebrity.
" We never imagined she would become so popular ," said her owner, Karla Gomez.
According to her, Merlini eats fruits, vegetables, fish and insects, but occasionally can't resist a traditional Mexican taco. The vet recently noticed that the duck is slightly over the recommended weight, but that doesn't seem to have stopped her from continuing her tour of fame.
Merlin's story brings to mind cases of animals that have become symbols of the World Cup, such as the famous octopus Paul during the 2010 World Cup. This time, however, it is a duck wearing a Mexico jersey that is winning the hearts of fans and bringing humor and a festive atmosphere to the biggest event in world football.
