US President Donald Trump said a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran to end the conflict with Iran could be signed within 48 hours. Speaking after the G7 summit and then on his arrival in France for a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron in Versailles, Trump said the 14-point memorandum of understanding could be signed "tomorrow or the day after."
According to information made public by a US official, the document provides for the cessation of all fighting, including in Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the end of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran's commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.
The agreement also provides for the US and Iran to conduct negotiations for a final agreement within a maximum period of 60 days, a period that can be extended with the consent of both parties.
However, Trump downplayed the importance of the deadline. Asked if 60 days constituted a hard limit for reaching a final deal, he replied: “As long as they behave properly, I don’t really care about the deadline.”
The US president argued that the new agreement is more favorable than the Barack Obama-era nuclear deal. At one point during his communication with the media, he joked that the document could be called the "Trump Deal", while adding that if the process fails, he will attribute responsibility to Vice President JD Vance.
Trump also repeated his warnings to Tehran, stating that the United States would return to military action if Iran did not respect its commitments. He said that Washington would continue to exert strong pressure on Iran in the event of a violation of the agreement.
