A thick cloud of toxic smoke has blanketed Thessaloniki after a large fire broke out in the Oreokastro area of northern Greece on Saturday evening. The smell of burning plastic has spread to many neighborhoods of the city, while authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary movement.
After an all-night battle, firefighters have managed to bring the flames in the forest area under control, but the fire continues to burn in two factories, one textile and one recycling. In the latter, there are reports of constant rekindling and more than ten explosions, due to flammable materials inside.

160 firefighters continue to operate on the ground, supported by aerial vehicles, while helicopters and planes are supplied with water from the Thermaic Gulf. The operation is expected to last for several more hours.
According to Greek authorities, black smoke is visible from kilometers away and has reached the center of Thessaloniki, covering Aristotelous Square and the Thermaic Gulf area.
Due to air pollution, authorities have activated the 112 emergency system, ordering the evacuation of several areas and urging residents to keep windows closed and avoid going out, especially children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems.
