The director of the Civil Guard is also under investigation: she is suspected of trying to divert investigations against the prime minister's family members and associates. But the People's Party also has its "skeletons" in the closet.

A report published by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo says that 126 people linked to the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) are currently under investigation or have been convicted in around ten different court cases. According to the media, their number is greater than that of Socialist deputies in the Spanish Congress.

Among the most recent cases are Belén Gualda and Bartolomé Lora, president and vice-president of SEPI (State Society of Industrial Participations), as well as the General Director of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González. She, along with the operational director Manuel Llamas, are being investigated on suspicion of obstruction of justice, after allegedly attempting to influence investigations into family members and associates of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Despite political pressure, Sánchez continues to hold on to the government thanks to the support of coalition partners Sumar and the Basque and Catalan nationalist parties. According to political analysts, this balance could only be called into question if illegal financing of the PSOE were proven.

The report includes at least 26 former and current high-level officials. Among them are former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos and his former aide Koldo García, involved in the so-called "Mask Case," which relates to public contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list also includes former socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. According to the charges, he is part of the investigation into the "Plus Ultra" affair, which is related to the financial rescue of the airline Plus Ultra during the pandemic. Investigators suspect a possible corruption and money laundering scheme, charges that remain the subject of legal proceedings.

One of the most important figures at the center of the investigation is Santos Cerdán, the former organizational secretary of the PSOE and the party's former number three. He is accused of corruption, criminal organization and influence peddling in connection with public contracts during the pandemic. Cerdán has denied the charges and stated that he is the victim of "political persecution."

The prime minister's wife, Begoña Gómez, is also under the spotlight. She is being investigated for alleged favoritism, influence peddling and other charges related to her academic activities. The investigation was launched after a complaint was filed by the organization Manos Limpias, considered by Spanish media to be close to the far right. Gómez denies the charges.

Another judicial proceeding involves David Sánchez, the prime minister's brother, who is accused of influence peddling and alleged irregularities in his appointment to public positions in the province of Badajoz. He has also denied the charges.

According to the ongoing investigation, several close government associates are suspected of attempting to discredit investigators, judges and Civil Guard leaders who were dealing with cases related to the prime minister's inner circle. Among the individuals named is former socialist councilor Leire Díez, who denies any wrongdoing.

The article points out that even the People's Party (PP), now in opposition, has previously been involved in major corruption scandals, including the "Gürtel" affair, which led to the fall of Mariano Rajoy's government in 2018.

Also mentioned is the case of former Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, who was sentenced by the Supreme Court to a temporary ban from exercising his duties for revealing official secrets. The case relates to the publication of confidential information in a tax investigation against the partner of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The prosecution has requested a partial apology for García Ortiz, arguing that his actions were not carried out for personal gain, while the opposition accuses him of acting in favor of the PSOE./ Adapted from "Pamphlet"
