After several hours of protests in front of the Prime Minister's Office building, citizens who have been part of the movement for a "New Albania" for 18 days have begun marching on the main streets of Tirana.
With banners in their hands and chanting slogans against the government and the political class, the protesters set off on a march, declaring that their movement is no longer just against a specific project or decision, but against a political system that, according to them, has lost touch with citizens.
"Rama go away", "Rama in prison", "Berisha in prison", "The end has come for you", "Resign" and "New Albania" were the chants that accompanied the march, while citizens warned that the protests will continue in the coming days.
During the rally in front of the Prime Minister's Office, several citizens delivered strong speeches against corruption, mass immigration, poverty, and the capture of institutions. A citizen suffering from cancer declared that he would stay in the square day and night until the voices of the protesters were heard, while pensioners and activists demanded the resignation of the government and a new political model for the country.
As the column of protesters moves through the streets of Tirana, the prevailing belief among participants is that the movement is gaining more and more support every day, not only in the capital, but also in other cities in the country and in the diaspora.
What began as opposition to the Zvërnec project is now turning into a broader revolt against the Albanian political elite. The protesters claim they are challenging a political caste that has governed the country for decades and that their main demand remains the construction of a “new Albania,” with institutions serving the citizens and not the government.
With the march continuing on the streets of the capital and with the calls echoing in the center of Tirana, citizens are determined that the protest will not stop, warning that citizen pressure will continue until their demands are met.
