The Paradox of Gegnishte: Between the Literary Elite and the "Village Gegnishte"

The Paradox of Gegnishte: Between the Literary Elite and the "Village

Disconnected from institutions and without a norm to restore to use, Ghegnish risks remaining alive only as a spoken language, but truncated as a cultivated language...

Today's Gegnisht is experiencing a kind of duality that is both fascinating and melancholic. On one side stands the literary, inimitable Gegnisht of Fishta, Mjeda, Gurakuqi, Migjeni, Camaj, Koliqi, etc. - a monumental and precise linguistic architecture.

On the other hand, there is the daily reality: a mosaic of thousands of colors, where the "village grin" prevails over the cultivated norm.

The Myth of 100 Writers

Gegnishten, literary, official, is spoken and written by only about 100 people (still seems like a lot to me!) The rest speak and write the Gegnishten of their own village!

Perhaps this number also seems generous! These 100 who know how to write literary Ghegnish correctly, is not just a provocation. It is a cold diagnosis of our cultural reality. After 1972, cultivated Ghegnish remained outside the institutions, gradually transforming into a kind of "Albanian Latin" with the difference that Latin is called a "dead language" while Ghegnish was transformed into: "a language killed, imprisoned, arrested!"

Whoever used it was called: Reactionary of the Albanian Language!

Accuracy vs. Improvisation: Literary Gegnisht requires a grammatical discipline (infinitives, short forms, specific inflections) that is no longer taught in schools! The language has syntactic, morphological, grammatical, phonetic, phonological, lexical, semantic, pragmatic (language in everyday action) rules - terms that sound foreign to the Gegnishts of the village!

Without these foundations, writing turns into improvisation.

Fragmentation: Without a central regulator, the Gheg language is atomizing! (it is crumbling, turning to dust)! Whoever does not master the literary norm ends up writing as he speaks in his narrow circle, transferring the features of the language of the neighborhood or village directly to paper.

When "The Village" Takes the Place of the Book

The strength of the Ghegnish language has always been its liveliness, poetics, endless word formation, musicality, but its weakness today lies in the lack of unity! When everyone uses the phonetics and lexicon of their own area, the language loses its power to be universal.

The Paradox of Gegnishte: Between the Literary Elite and the "Village

Many Northern writers write exactly as they speak at the family dinner table! This means that they unintentionally limit their window of communication to only those around them!

Thus, a kind of invisible, but harmful barrier is created: The Literary Gegnishtja was once a bridge that connected the entire North and the Albanian lands, while the "village Gegnishtja" risks remaining a closed circle.

A Cultural Resistance

The danger is not that Ghegnish will disappear as a spoken language! It resonates strongly in the streets, music, folklore, and homes. The real danger is the loss of its academic nobility! For 35 years now, there has been no serious attempt to create at least a minimal grammar of literary Ghegnish! Without this, all discussions are completely empty! The few connoisseurs of literary Ghegnish (official language until 1972) should have organized at least one meeting for this!

Writing correctly in Ghegnish today is not simply a matter of desire; it is an act of intellectual resistance. Those "100 people" who keep the correct norm alive are the last guardians of a linguistic cathedral that, for the rest, is slowly turning into a beautiful but unusable ruin.

The absence of the Albanian language in the Altar of the Albanian Language is completely unjustifiable, and extremely harmful!

Wasting time only prolongs the agony of an extraordinary national treasure that we are all slowly suffocating!/ Pamphlet
