New details have come to light regarding the injury of a police officer this evening on the Fier-Dimal axis, a serious event that has alarmed the structures of the Police and the Police Supervision Agency.
According to preliminary information, the perpetrator of the incident is 45-year-old Zamir Skënderi, a person with a criminal record, who, while being escorted by the police, managed to grab the service weapon of an officer and injure him.
The incident occurred on the outskirts of the village of Kutalli, in the territory of the Dimal municipality. It is learned that Skënder had previously been escorted by police officers after a conflict that occurred at the premises of the Fier Judicial District Prosecutor's Office.
Three police officers were transporting the 45-year-old from Fier to the Kuçova Police Station. While driving on the Fier-Dimal national highway, Skënder, who was in the back seat with officer Arsen Toska, took advantage of the moment to take the 20-year-old police officer's service weapon.
Immediately after that, he fired a gun, wounding the officer in the thigh. Sources indicate that after the shooting, the 45-year-old attempted to leave the scene, but was neutralized and arrested by the two other officers in the vehicle.
The injured policeman was initially transported by ambulance to the Berat Regional Hospital, where he received first aid. Due to the injury he sustained, he was then taken to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana for more specialized treatment. Fortunately, according to official sources, his life is out of danger.
After Skënder's arrest, the police conducted a physical search of him, where a quantity of narcotics, suspected to be cocaine, was found hidden in his body.
Numerous forces from the Berat Local Police Directorate, as well as inspectors from the Police Supervision Agency, have arrived at the scene, who are investigating the full circumstances of the incident and the procedures followed during the escort of the 45-year-old man.
The investigations have focused not only on the dynamics of the injury, but also on how the assailant managed to get the officer's service weapon inside the police vehicle.
