The myth of Donald Trump's absolute power relies on everyone's belief that it is true.
So hints of vulnerability, successful challenges to his authority, or portents of a not-too-distant future that he does not dominate, pose a political risk to the president.
The first nine months in office of the second Trump administration were anchored on the premise that if you don’t like what he’s doing, try to stop him. Trump, on many occasions, overrode the legal and political checks and balances intended to constrain presidents and imposed his bold vision of broad executive authority.
He has shattered decades of conventions at home and abroad, started trade wars and scorned allies. He has sent troops into U.S. cities, causing constitutional crises; dismantled entire government departments; and harassed universities, law firms, media organizations, and corporate executives who bowed to his will.
The defense of the republic is not dead. Constitutional and political accountability is always retrospective and takes some time to activate. That is one reason why Trump's wild and chaotic start to his second term has raised fears of autocracy.
But a sense of permanence and omnipotence fostered by the president just took a hit, after an election night packed with Democrats, apparent skepticism among Supreme Court justices about Trump's emergency tariff powers and reminders that the Constitution should bar him from a third term.
Winning gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey may have held office only in blue states. But they inflicted heavier-than-expected losses on rivals who embraced Trump and MAGA values.
Even before their big wins, Democrats revealed a taste for fighting the president with their own. California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday praised voters who backed a redistricting plan to counter Trump's election rigging in Texas, saying: "We stood tall and strong... after we teased the bear, the bear roared."
Another Democratic governor, JB Pritzker of Illinois, has spent weeks resisting Trump’s social media threats to impose a “Chipocalypse Now” on the Windy City. And several Democratic-led states have vowed to develop their own public health guidelines after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was dismissed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

And MAGA strategists’ claims of a new political realignment are now less credible, having relied on Trump’s impressive gains with minorities last year. He, for example, won 46% of Latino voters nationally, critically eroding a vital Democratic coalition. But on Tuesday, Sherrill won New Jersey’s Latino vote 68% to 31%, reversing previous Republican gains.
But he also believes he wields unbridled power. “I’m not a dictator … (but) I have the right to do whatever I want,” Trump told his cabinet in August, referring to his crackdown on crime in the city’s downtown core.
Trump's misunderstandings about the powers of the presidency and insistence on testing constitutional limits may have been fueled by the conservative majority on the Supreme Court, which ruled in one of his now-overturned criminal cases that presidents have substantial immunity from prosecution for official acts in office.
After a year of all Trump, all the time, the cleansing spectacle of Americans going to the polls has allowed his opponents to dream of a post-Trump era. While they would prefer not to, Republican Party leaders should do the same, because the races in New Jersey and Virginia proved the truth that Trump can reach parts of the electorate that other Republicans cannot. Barring some constitutional arson, Trump will never lead another Republican Party candidate.
