Sexually harassed in public, the President of Mexico denounces the perpetrator:
Claudia Sheinbaum

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that she will sue a man who sexually harassed her during a public appearance in Mexico City.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, near the National Palace, where Sheinbaum was greeting citizens. In a video posted on social media, a man is seen approaching her from behind and trying to kiss her on the neck, placing his hands on her. The president immediately leaves, while her staff intervenes to stop the perpetrator, who has been arrested by police.

"If I don't report it, what will happen to other women in our country? If they do this to the president, imagine what happens to ordinary women," Sheinbaum declared at Wednesday's press conference.

She said she decided to sue the perpetrator after receiving information that he had also harassed other women in the crowd. “A dividing line needs to be drawn,” the president added.

Women's rights organizations have called the incident an example of Mexico's entrenched culture of machismo, where men often feel free to harass even women in high positions.

Mexico has been facing a crisis of violence against women for years, with around 98% of gender-based murders remaining unpunished.

Sheinbaum, who as a candidate had promised to fight femicide, has yet to achieve significant improvements in this regard.

The incident occurred as debates over the safety of public officials are growing in the country, especially after the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, during "Day of the Dead" celebrations.

However, the president has made it clear that she will not change her approach to citizens, despite the risk these public meetings pose.
