Mamdani's victory should be treated with caution by the Democratic Party. She has rediscovered Barack Obama's aggressive mediation skills, exploiting voters' concerns about the economy ahead of the midterm elections...
The big tent, the high cost of living, the changing rules of the game: in light of the victory of Mamdani, the new mayor of New York, a Democratic Socialist, and the other successes of the Progressive Party in the November 4 elections, from winning the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey to winning the referendum in California, these three fronts will be decisive, a year from now, in the midterm elections that could deprive Trump of control of Congress.
Mamdani's landslide victory, with the mobilization of over 100,000 volunteers, represents an extraordinary injection of energy for a left-wing party that has so far been discouraged and disoriented by the return of Donald Trump and his authoritarian agenda.
The mobilization of young people (and also that of women, symbolized by the rise of two new governors) is an invaluable asset for Democrats, but we cannot forget that America is now a deeply divided country: the Northeast, the Pacific coast and some large cities in the interior of the country are marked on the political map in the blue of the left, the rest in the red of the Republicans.
If mismanaged, Mamdani’s victory, with his left-wing populism that combines laudable causes with compelling proposals that are appealing to the electorate but sometimes impractical or prohibitively expensive, risks accentuating this polarization. The new mayor faces major challenges: to counter a liberated Trump and to demonstrate his ability to govern effectively and with balance, while injecting a healthy dose of realism into his plans. He also faces a third, less obvious but perhaps more difficult challenge to manage: curbing the radicalism of the “hardline” left.
Some Democratic figures have been criticized for not officially endorsing the candidate from their party's hard-line wing. But Mamdani's own advisers were surprised by the avalanche of negative reactions that hit them after the phone call between their candidate and Barack Obama: activists denouncing a now "conformist" Zohran, immersed in the establishment.
In reality, Democrats can only resurface and win again if they can repair the divisions in the big tent under which moderates and liberals once found shelter, without fighting each other. And also whites, blacks, and Hispanics.

Ish-presidenti, i heshtur për një kohë të gjatë përballë abuzimeve të pushtetit nga Trump dhe i hutuar nga axhenda radikale e Mamdanit, kohët e fundit ka dalë nga letargjia e tij.
Dhe këtu hyn në lojë faktori i dytë: ashtu si Mamdani dhe Guvernatori i Kalifornisë, Gavin Newsom, i cili udhëhoqi dhe fitoi betejën për një rivizatim miqësor ndaj demokratëve të hartës së zonës zgjedhore, një betejë që në vetvete është shumë e diskutueshme, por është e justifikuar përballë manovrave edhe më serioze republikane për të shtrembëruar votën në Teksas dhe shtete të tjera "të kuqe", Obama gjithashtu e kupton se "rregullat e lojës kanë ndryshuar". Ai duhet të luftojë pa u lodhur. Dhe ndoshta t'i ndotë ata.
Në fund të fundit, Obama e ka ditur që nga viti 2016 se ekstremizmi joliberal i Trump nuk mund të luftohej me sjellje të mira. Që atëherë, përballë vulgaritetit, gënjeshtrave dhe insinuatave të fushatës së Donaldit, Michelle u kundërpërgjigj: "Kur të tjerët ulen poshtë, ne ngrihemi lart".
Tani Obama po ndryshon kurs: ai u rrëfen miqve të tij se deri më tani mendonte se Trump, pavarësisht sa dëmtues, do të triumfonte, se Amerika do të qëndronte e fortë. Tani ai nuk është më i sigurt. Kështu që ai lë mënjanë dyshimet e tij në lidhje me korrektësinë institucionale të zgjedhjes së Kalifornisë dhe mbështet luftën kundër ndryshimit të hartave zgjedhore. Dhe, ndërsa nuk pajtohet me shumë pika të axhendës së tij, ai e konsideron Mamdanin një aset të rëndësishëm për rigjallërimin e frontit Demokratik. Tani do të jetë detyrë e tij të sigurojë që entuziazmi të mos shndërrohet në energji pozitive dhe jo në optimizëm të pamatur. Dhe të ndihmojë Mamdanin ta bëjë axhendën e tij të pajtueshme me parimet udhëheqëse të partisë pa dëmtuar shtytjen socialdemokrate që mbështet projektin e tij.
Nuk është mision i lehtë, duke pasur parasysh se ai do të duhet të përballet jo vetëm me përjashtimin e "personave të vijës së ashpër", por edhe me përpjekjet e parashikueshme të lëvizjes MAGA për të prishur një plan të tillë me provokime, dhe ndoshta edhe me ngacmime: disa ligjvënës do të donin ta pengonin Mamdanin të betohet si kryetar bashkie duke u thirrur në një dispozitë kushtetuese që u ndalon mbështetësve të kryengritjes të mbajnë poste publike.
Por votimi i djeshëm zbulon edhe diçka tjetër: nga Nju Jorku në Virxhinia, votuesit u thanë anketuesve se votuan kryesisht duke pasur parasysh shqetësimet e tyre ekonomike, koston e lartë të jetesës që e bëri Bidenin jopopullor dhe tani po ka të njëjtin efekt tek Trump.
