Mexico's elimination by England in the round of 16 of the World Cup has brought the end of Javier Aguirre's era on the national team bench.
Immediately after the defeat at the Azteca Stadium, the Mexican coach announced his resignation, taking responsibility for the result.
"The dream is over, but we have shown that we are close to the biggest teams. Players win matches, while coaches lose them. I lost this match," Aguirre declared at the press conference.
The coach expressed pride in the team's journey, even though the World Cup adventure ended again in the round of 16.
"These five matches will remain unforgettable. Today I say goodbye to the national team and leave with great pride," he added.
The Mexican Federation has decided that Aguirre's successor will be his assistant, Rafa Márquez, the legendary former Mexico captain and former Barcelona defender.
Aguirre did not spare kind words for his successor.
"I had him first as a player and then as a colleague. He is fully prepared for this task. I will always be there for him for whatever he needs. Rafa is a man of values and an excellent coach. I am convinced that he will do even better."
With the conclusion of the Mexico-England match, the matches played on Mexican soil in this World Cup have come to an end. From this stage onwards, all remaining matches of the tournament will be played in the United States.
