The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has stated that an American soldier has been killed in northern Iraq during an operation to dispose of the remains of a downed Iranian attack drone.
According to a statement from CENTCOM, the service member was killed on July 18 during a controlled explosion of unexploded ordnance on a single-engine drone. A second service member was slightly injured and is receiving medical treatment.
"A U.S. soldier in northern Iraq was killed in action on July 18 during a controlled explosion of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian single-pronged attack drone. A second soldier was wounded and continues to receive medical treatment for a minor injury ," the CENTCOM statement said.
The US command also announced that unidentified human remains had been found in Jordan, after a member of the US forces was previously reported missing during operations.
The death comes less than 24 hours after the US military announced the deaths of two more service members in Jordan. The latest casualty brings the number of US service members killed in the nearly five-month conflict to 17.
