Spain is facing a wave of massive fires that have engulfed several regions of the country, burning over 280,000 hectares of land and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate.
The largest fire is located about 100 kilometers north of Madrid, in the Guadalajara region, where the flames have spread rapidly in the Sierra Norte natural park. Authorities have described the situation as very serious, and so far no casualties have been reported.
Around 350 firefighters and soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit, supported by 25 firefighting aircraft, have been engaged in firefighting operations.
One of the hardest-hit areas is La Mierla, where the fire has engulfed around 5,400 hectares and forced around 600 residents from 12 localities to flee their homes.
Another large fire is also continuing near Zaragoza, in the northeast of the country. According to regional authorities, the flames are not yet under control and have so far scorched nearly 160,000 hectares of land.
Despite the size of the fires, no casualties have been reported so far, while authorities continue the battle to contain the spread of the flames.
