From a conflict over the Sazan project, the protest has transformed into an open challenge to the political and economic model that protesters say has dominated Albania for 35 years. In this interview, Lëvizja Bashke MP Redi Muçi explains why the revolt goes beyond a luxury resort and why the slogan “New Albania” has become its political axis.
What began as opposition to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner's project in Sazan has turned into a civic movement with much broader demands. For more than 50 days, thousands of citizens have been protesting, demanding not only a halt to the project, but also a change in the country's political and economic model.
In this interview with Turkish journalist Alan Burasi, Lëvizja Bashkë MP Redi Muçi explains why the protest has no leader, why the resignation of the Rama government and new elections are being demanded, as well as what the idea of a "New Albania" means for the protesters.
What does the Sazan project represent for you and why did it become a cause for protests?
It should be clarified that the project does not only include the island of Sazan, but also the lagoon where flamingos migrate every year. For me, it symbolizes the wrong development model that Albania has followed in recent years.
The economy has relied largely on the construction of luxury resorts along the coast, high-rise towers in Tirana, and mass tourism. This model has not benefited ordinary citizens.
On the one hand, we have had large-scale laundering of money suspected of coming from drug trafficking and invested in construction. On the other hand, resorts and towers have damaged the environment, destroyed public spaces, and changed the identity of cities.
Historic buildings, such as the National Theater and the old stadium, have been demolished to make way for new construction. Another issue is ownership, which has been ongoing for 35 years. The protest began on May 30, when residents of the area objected to the fact that their land was being transferred to a person who claims ownership, even though he is under investigation for drug trafficking and document forgery.
He is the one who sold the land to investors, while the residents are left without a solution. The government has repeatedly told them to go to the courts, but in Albania very few such cases are resolved.
This is a problem that affects not only this area, but the entire country. That's why the reaction was so great.
Is this project related to other major investments, such as the Vlora Airport or the energy agreement with the US and Greece?
Many major projects are being investigated by SPAK. The latest case involves 20 people suspected of links to drug trafficking, who are suspected of having obtained construction permits approved by the prime minister himself.

Sa i përket marrëveshjes energjetike me SHBA-në dhe Greqinë, nuk dua të spekuloj. Mund të ketë lidhje me përfshirjen e familjes Trump në projekte në Shqipëri, por nuk kam prova për ta pohuar këtë.
Si ka evoluar protesta dhe pse sot konsiderohet shumë më tepër sesa kundërshtim ndaj një resorti?
Protesta nisi më 30 maj, kur banorët organizuan tubimin e parë. Unë isha i vetmi deputet që ngrita në Parlament çështjen e shkatërrimit të mjedisit dhe të drejtave të pronës. Më pas u publikua videoja ku një banor tërhiqej zvarrë përgjatë telave me gjemba nga persona që e quanin veten roje private.
Ajo pamje e preku opinionin publik dhe u bë pika që mbushi kupën. Një ditë më vonë, mijëra qytetarë dolën spontanisht në shesh në Tiranë. Sot protesta vazhdon prej më shumë se 50 ditësh. Shkëndija ishte Sazani, por protesta përfaqëson shumë më tepër.
Kjo është revoltë kundër mënyrës se si është qeverisur Shqipëria gjatë 35 viteve të fundit.
Politikanët kanë ndërtuar lidhje me oligarkët dhe me grupet e trafikut të drogës, ndërsa këto para janë investuar në ndërtim. Të njëjtët njerëz kontrollojnë edhe një pjesë të madhe të mediave.
Kur organizuam protestën e parë, ftuam të gjitha mediat. Asnjëra nuk erdhi. Po të mos ishin telefonat e qytetarëve, pamjet e dhunës nuk do të ishin bërë publike. Prandaj shqiptarët nuk protestojnë vetëm kundër këtij projekti. Ata protestojnë kundër një modeli politik dhe ekonomik që ka dominuar vendin për 35 vjet.
Madje, në shesh dëgjohet shpesh slogani “Rama në burg, Berisha në burg”, sepse protestuesit besojnë se të dy përfaqësojnë të njëjtin sistem. Po ashtu dëgjohen thirrje për një “Shqipëri të Re”, për ndryshim sistemi dhe për një model zhvillimi që nuk mbështetet te oligarkët dhe ndërtimet e financuara nga paratë e trafikut të drogës.
A ka protesta një drejtim politik apo është një lëvizje spontane?
Protesta lindi spontanisht dhe edhe sot mbetet një lëvizje qytetare ku marrin pjesë njerëz nga shtresa, mosha dhe bindje të ndryshme politike. Nuk ka një lider të vetëm. Askush nuk ka pretenduar ta drejtojë protestën ose të marrë vendime në emër të saj.
Në shesh nuk marrin pjesë përfaqësues të partisë në pushtet, por ka qytetarë që kanë votuar për parti të ndryshme, si edhe mbështetës të forcave të reja politike, përfshirë Lëvizjen Bashkë. Pikërisht kjo e bën të veçantë protestën.
Njerëz me bindje të ndryshme janë bashkuar rreth një kërkese të përbashkët: dorëheqjen e kryeministrit Edi Rama dhe mbajtjen e zgjedhjeve të parakohshme. Synimi afatgjatë është ndërtimi i një “Shqipërie të Re”, por hapi i parë është largimi i kësaj qeverie.
After the elections, the laws that, in our opinion, have made possible this economic model based on massive construction, money laundering, and the theft of citizens' property must be repealed.
What worked best in the protest and what could have been done differently?
I think the citizens have shown maturity and resilience. Throughout this time
we have avoided personal protagonism, which could have divided the movement. Equally important, the protesters have not fallen prey to government efforts to discredit them or pit them against each other.
From day one, the prime minister has not responded politically to the protest's demands. Instead, he has personally attacked many of the people who have taken the floor in the square.
Although the number of protesters today is smaller than in peak weeks, thousands of citizens continue to come out every evening.
This shows that the protest has not died down. I believe that with the return of autumn, participation will increase again. Perhaps it would have been useful to create a representative council to better coordinate the discussions and organization.
However, I do not consider this a major shortcoming, because anyone who wanted to speak out in the streets had the opportunity. For me, the biggest success is that the protest has maintained its main demand unchanged: the resignation of the current government and the holding of new elections.
As long as this demand remains unchanged, the protest continues to fulfill its mission.
Ky është një reagim shumë i vonuar. Që nga viti 1997, Shqipëria eci "në gjendje të çalë" dhe klasa politike i mashtroi keq njerëzit! PS dhe PD për ndërtesat, bizneset brenda! Kur shikon arkivat e Parlamentit, mendon se Shqipëria është një "utopi", gjithçka është perfekte në mbështetje të njerëzve! Kur del nga Parlamenti, ecën 100 metra për të hyrë në institucione, frika jote arrin kulmin, ndihesh sikur je në një "Republikë Bonanza" sepse çdo veprim është mbështetje e disa oligarkëve që u japin vetëm "kocka peshku" njerëzve. Shembull, Aeroporti i Rinasit! Çfarë ndodhi? Pse hesht Ahmetaj? Sheraton? Gjerman. Porti i Vlorës, plaçkitja e Himarës! Kompani greke, gjermane, austriake dhe italiane? Të gjitha u larguan të dëshpëruara. A pyeti Parlamenti pse? Kjo listë shembujsh është kilometra e gjatë!
