US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Washington on Sunday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss the implementation of the trilateral framework following the failure of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
According to a statement by US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, Rubio praised the efforts of the Lebanese government, under the leadership of President Aoun, to strengthen the country's sovereignty, disarm Hezbollah, dismantle its military infrastructure, and advance towards peace.
“The Secretary commended the courage of the Government of Lebanon, under the leadership of President Aoun, for their determined efforts to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty, disarm Hezbollah and dismantle its terrorist infrastructure, and move toward peace. The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the Tripartite Framework ,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
President Aoun's office announced earlier that a US-Lebanon summit will be held at the White House this week. According to reports, the memorandum of understanding reached last month between the US and Iran aimed to end the fighting in Lebanon as part of a broader ceasefire plan.
However, despite this memorandum and the US-brokered ceasefires between Israel and Lebanon, clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed group, have continued.
During a meeting in Washington last month, Israel and Lebanon also reached a trilateral agreement that provides for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from two areas in southern Lebanon, creating conditions for the continuation of negotiations.
