The Italian government has faced surprise after a post by US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform, where he requested a "protection order" against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

According to the Corriere della Sera report, at Palazzo Chigi (the Italian Prime Minister's Office) the first reaction was one of "surprise", while the majority leaders held consultations during the night to determine the official position.

According to the newspaper's sources, Trump's post was published shortly after 11:00 PM and was considered a surprise attack, which also surprised Italian diplomacy.

The article suggests that the post may be linked to an interview Trump gave to Italian television station La7 in mid-June. In that interview, the US president stated that during the G7 summit, Meloni had "made him feel bad", claiming that she had insisted on taking a photo with him. The Italian Prime Minister denied this version, publishing a video on social media after the European Council and then another critical reaction on Instagram.

Although Rome had spent recent weeks trying to reduce tensions with the US administration, according to Corriere della Sera, this post represents a new escalation.

"We will not respond to provocation"

According to the newspaper, the Italian government has decided not to react publicly to Trump's post.

"We will not respond to this provocation ," is quoted as having been the initial reaction from Palazzo Chigi.

Rome's strategy remains to avoid engaging in personal controversies and focus on concrete issues related to bilateral relations and the international agenda.

During the night, Prime Minister Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held contacts to coordinate their position. According to sources cited by the newspaper, the decision was to ignore the attack, considering it unjustified, out of context and of a personal nature.

The agenda for the NATO summit remains unchanged.

Despite the developments, Italy does not intend to change the plan for the NATO summit in Turkey. The Italian delegation will participate according to the program.

Corriere della Sera writes that several Italian ministers, in unofficial conversations, have expressed concern about the American president's actions, while officially the government has chosen not to comment further.

According to the article, just a few days after the reception organized at Villa Taverna on the occasion of the US Independence Day, attended by most members of the Italian government, relations between Rome and the American administration are experiencing another moment of tension.

Diplomatic sources, quoted by the newspaper, express regret that the efforts of the American ambassador to Italy, Tilman J. Fertitta, to ease the climate between the two countries may prove futile.

The article also notes that Meloni appears to have joined the list of European leaders, such as Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer, who have been the target of personal attacks by Donald Trump.

In closing, Corriere reports that Meloni's "Fratelli d'Italia" party has also been instructed not to react publicly. Meanwhile, scenarios for the upcoming NATO summit are being analyzed at Palazzo Chigi, with the aim of avoiding personal controversies taking the place of the main issues in relations between Italy and the United States.
