Turkey hosts NATO Summit

The US president will stay in a fortified presidential suite, while Turkish authorities and the US Secret Service have put in place unprecedented security measures for the July 7-8 summit.

US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Ankara on Tuesday for the NATO Summit, accompanied by a delegation of about 1,000 people. According to Turkish media, Turkish authorities and the US Secret Service have implemented extraordinary security measures for the visit.

According to CNN Türk, the special vehicles that the American president will use have already been transported to the Turkish capital, while his helicopter has also arrived disassembled to be assembled on site.

The hotel where Trump will be staying has been placed under tight security and turned into a fortified area. US agents have conducted extensive searches inside the hotel and the surrounding area.

Trump will stay in the presidential suite, which is about 190 square meters in size and includes a bedroom, living room, private office and work space. According to CNN Turk, the windows are bulletproof, while the walls are designed to withstand explosions.

The 23-story hotel has been completely isolated ahead of the US president's arrival, while members of the American delegation have begun arriving in Ankara.

The area around the hotel is guarded by the Secret Service, special forces and police units, while surrounding roads are blocked with security barriers. CNN Türk reported that the measures are so strict that "not a single bird is allowed to fly", a phrase used to describe the maximum level of control.

The hotel is located near the US Embassy and close to the Presidential Complex, where the main meetings of the summit will take place. After completing his program and meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump is expected to spend the night at this hotel.

Ankara will host the 36th NATO Summit on July 7 and 8, with the participation of leaders of the Alliance's 32 member countries. The first officials have arrived since Monday, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as well as delegations from Bulgaria, Australia and North Macedonia.

This is the first time since 2004 that Turkey has hosted a NATO summit.

President Erdoğan is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Donald Trump on July 7, which is scheduled to be followed by a joint press conference. In the evening, Erdoğan and his wife Emine Erdoğan will host an official dinner for the participating leaders and their spouses.

On the second day of the summit, the official welcome ceremony, the leaders' family photo and the main working session will take place, following the opening speech by Mark Rutte.

The discussions will focus on increasing defense spending, strengthening NATO's deterrent capabilities, security in the Euro-Atlantic area, the war in Ukraine, and developments on the Alliance's southern flank.

According to reports, Rutte is expected to call on member countries to fulfill the commitment to gradually increase defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035, a target adopted at the last summit under pressure from the Trump administration.

Around 100 ministers, high-level diplomats and representatives of international organizations are also expected to participate in Ankara.
