NATO summit kicks off with over $50 billion defense deal

The first day of the 36th NATO Summit in Ankara was marked by important meetings between Alliance leaders, billions of dollars in defense industry deals and messages of unity in the face of global security challenges. The two-day summit takes place at a time when NATO is grappling with the war in Ukraine, the Russian threat, tensions in the Middle East and pressure from the United States for European allies to increase defense investment.

One of the main developments of the day was the NATO Defence Industry Forum (NSDIF 2026), where new agreements and investments worth at least $50 billion were announced between Allied countries and defence industry companies. The package includes contracts for air defence systems, joint production of military equipment, expansion of strategic transport capabilities and investments in advanced technologies.

The forum also presented a $40 billion program for anti-drone defense, which aims to develop new anti-drone systems, strengthen the training of armed forces and increase the joint operational capabilities of member countries. In addition, NATO announced the launch of the program for the next generation of AWACS aircraft, which will replace the current fleet of early warning and air control aircraft, and confirmed that Triton drones will join the Alliance's capabilities for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

On the diplomatic front, attention focused on the meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump, who made his first visit to Turkey after returning to the White House. Erdoğan stated that he expects many of the issues on the bilateral agenda to be resolved positively thanks to cooperation between the two countries, while strategic relations, the defense industry and regional issues were at the center of discussions.

Another important moment was the meeting between NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Rutte reiterated the Alliance's support for Ukraine, while Zelensky called for continued military and political assistance in confronting Russian aggression.

Speaking to the media, Rutte stressed that the Ankara summit should serve to translate allies' commitments into concrete results, highlighting increased military spending, expanded defense industry production and long-term support for Ukraine. At the same time, he called on member states to present credible plans for achieving the target of investing 5% of GDP in defense, a commitment adopted by the Alliance last year.

On the sidelines of the summit, NATO leaders also took the traditional family photo, while President Erdoğan and his wife, Emine Erdoğan, hosted an official dinner for the heads of state and government participating in the summit at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

The summit proceedings will continue on Wednesday, when the adoption of the final declaration and the development of the second round of bilateral meetings between the Alliance leaders are expected. / Pamphlet
