Spanish government reacts to Trump's statements

The government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has reacted calmly to the recent statements of US President Donald Trump, who during the NATO summit in Ankara warned that he intends to cut off trade ties with Spain, describing the country as a "terrible" partner of the Alliance.

According to sources from Moncloa, the Spanish executive has received these comments with "calm and normality", emphasizing that Spain "maintains excellent social, cultural and economic relations with the United States". "We have no intention of changing this", the same sources add.

Furthermore, government sources highlight three main elements. First, they point out that the United States registers a trade surplus in relations with Spain, which means that it benefits more economically from exchanges between the two countries than Madrid.

Secondly, they recall that the European Union functions as a trading union, where no member state can be treated differently, a position that, according to them, has also been reiterated by the European Commission. Finally, they underline that economic relations are built by private companies and not by governments.

"Bilateral relations between the United States and Spain are beneficial to both countries, both in the trade and defense sectors," the sources emphasize.
