Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji has commemorated the one-year anniversary of his release, describing the period in prison as an "ordeal of political imprisonment."
In a reaction published on social media, Salianji states that the government can temporarily limit an individual's freedom, but it cannot imprison the beliefs, truth, and ideals that he represents.
According to him, Albania needs institutions that implement and respect the law, a policy that accepts dissenting opinions, as well as citizens who do not give up on demanding more democracy, justice, and accountability.
At the end of the message, the former Democratic MP emphasizes that, a year after his release, his conviction is even stronger. He emphasizes that obstacles can slow down his path, but they cannot change his direction, while expressing gratitude to all those who have supported him during this period.
"Today, a year of freedom. A year ago, the ordeal of political imprisonment ended. Sanctioned as such by 6 international resolutions! The government can tighten, it can temporarily limit a person's freedom, but it can never imprison the beliefs, truth and ideals that he has.
I have always chosen not to change my beliefs to adapt to circumstances. Because freedom is not a privilege granted by power; it is a right that is defended every day. Albania needs institutions that respect the law, for politics that accept different opinions, and for citizens who do not give up the right to demand more democracy, more justice, and more accountability.
"A year later, my conviction is even stronger: obstacles may delay the path, but they do not change the direction. Gratitude for the extraordinary support," writes Salianji.
