Ankara is hosting the NATO summit, where the leaders of the 32 member countries of the military alliance have gathered.
During the first day, discussions focused on increasing investment and strengthening the defense industry. The situation in Ukraine remains among the main topics on the agenda, as well as the 70 billion euro aid package that European allies are expected to formalize in Ankara to support Kiev over the next two years.
The day's program begins with speeches by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the leaders upon their arrival. This will be followed by an official welcoming ceremony, the traditional family photo and, at 11:15 local time (10:15 CET), a meeting of the North Atlantic Council.
The summit will close with a press conference by Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Statements by the leaders are then scheduled, while a press conference by United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to take place at 4:05 p.m.
During a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump said he had considered skipping the NATO summit and said it would not have happened solely because of his relationship with the Turkish president. He also did not rule out the possibility of further US troop withdrawals from Europe.
"We'll see. I've been very disappointed with NATO," Trump said, citing Britain, France, Germany and Italy, which he said had not done enough to support the United States in the conflict with Iran.
Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later today. The meeting is considered important for coordinating Western support for Ukraine at a time when the military and diplomatic situation in Eastern Europe remains tense.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also has several bilateral meetings on his agenda with heads of state and government, including the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama.
The first day of the summit ended with an official dinner hosted by the Turkish president for the leaders of NATO member states. Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by his wife, Linda Rama, also attended the event.
