Former Socialist Party MP Marjana Koçeku has joined the criticism of the government's decision to finance Kanye West's concert. Through a reaction on social media, she has opposed the use of 4 million euros for this activity, arguing that the funds should have been directed towards dealing with emergencies and protecting the territory from fires.
Koçek recalled the extensive damage caused by fires last year and warned that high temperatures are expected to make the situation even more difficult this summer.
"Last year our country went through a fire disaster. I have seen firsthand the extraordinary damage done to nature. This year the situation is expected to be even more alarming due to high temperatures."
The 4 million euros of a single-use stadium should have been invested in fire prevention, supporting residents, and strengthening emergency capacities.
"State and accountability are not replaced by spectacle. The loss of nature is the loss of Albania," writes Koçek.
This reaction comes a few weeks after Marjana Koçeku left the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group. She publicly clashed with Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding issues affecting the residents of the Thethi area. She subsequently participated in protests organized in support of the residents, openly expressing her opposition to the authorities' interventions and the government's stance.
