After the detention in Qafë, according to the three senior officials from North Macedonia, WLEN seeks official clarifications: Who gave the order and on what legal basis were they detained?
The detention at the Albanian border of three senior officials of the Albanian coalition VALEN has now gone from a border incident to a political issue between Tirana and Skopje.
After the detention for about an hour at the Qafë Thana border crossing of the coordinator of the VLEN Parliamentary Group, Bekim Qoku, MP Adnan Azizi and the Deputy Secretary General of the Government of North Macedonia, Hasim Murtezani, VLEN itself has issued an official response, demanding accountability from the Albanian authorities.
In its statement, VLEN states that the three officials were traveling on diplomatic passports and that they were detained for about an hour without receiving any official explanation.
According to the Albanian party, the border police only communicated to them unofficially that there was a ban on their entry into Albanian territory, but without presenting any decision, document or legal basis.
" The detention without explanation of our three officials requires an official response! Today, at the Qafë Thanë border crossing, the coordinator of the VLEN Parliamentary Group, Bekim Qoku, MP Adnan Azizi and the Deputy Secretary General of the Government, Hasim Murtezani, were detained for about an hour without any official explanation, although all three were equipped with diplomatic passports. According to information communicated unofficially by the border police, they are banned from entering. However, no decision, document or justification has been made known to them ," the statement said.
The ruling Albanian party in North Macedonia warns that such cases damage relations between Albanians on both sides of the border.
" VLEN requests the authorities of the Republic of Albania to inform the public opinion whether such a measure really exists. If so, who made this decision, on what legal basis it was based and what are the concrete reasons for such an action against elected officials and institutional representatives. Inter-Albanian relations should be built on transparency, institutional respect and clear communication, not on unexplained prohibitions and procedures that leave room for doubts ," VLEN emphasizes.
The reaction comes just hours after TV21 reported that the detention of the three officials was related to suspicions that they had supported or been involved in organizing citizen protests in Tirana.
The event also follows the decision of Albanian authorities to declare Kosovo activist Ikballe Huduti a "persona non grata", adding to the debate over how people who have expressed support for the civic protest against the Albanian government are being treated.
