United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today expressed deep concern about rising tensions between the United States and Iran, warning that a further escalation of fighting in the Persian Gulf region could have "catastrophic consequences" for global peace.
In a statement read by his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres called on both sides to urgently resume negotiations and return to the path of diplomacy.
"If full-scale hostilities resume, the consequences will be catastrophic for the peoples of the region, for international peace and security, and for the global economy ," the UN statement said.
Guterres assessed that the current situation risks undermining the diplomatic progress recently achieved between Tehran and Washington. He stressed the need for peaceful resolution of outstanding issues through dialogue, avoiding any actions that could lead to direct confrontation.
The statement comes at a tense moment in relations between the two countries, where the recent escalation of fighting in the Persian Gulf has raised concerns about regional and international stability.
The UN has expressed its readiness to facilitate dialogue between the parties, with the aim of preventing a new crisis that could have far-reaching effects on global energy markets, maritime security and peace in the Middle East.
