The United States has launched a new wave of attacks on Iran, in a further escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military's Central Command, CENTCOM, announced that, at the order of President Donald Trump, US forces have launched additional strikes against Iran, aimed at weakening Tehran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state-affiliated media outlets, including the Mehr and Fars agencies, reported explosions in several areas in southern Iran, near the Gulf coast. According to these reports, explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas and Sirik, while explosions were later reported near Konarak and Chabahar.

The semi-official Mehr news agency reported that Iranian air defenses were activated against what it described as "hostile targets" near the port city of Bandar Abbas.

The new attacks come after reports of explosions in southern Iran and after Washington's statements that the operations are aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in one of the world's most important maritime corridors. According to international reports, the Pentagon has linked the attacks to incidents against commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation remains unclear, and so far there is no confirmed damage or casualties from the latest attacks. Tensions in the region have increased significantly, while President Trump earlier declared that the ceasefire with Iran has ended.
