The coach who led Croatia in 111 matches and led them to historic successes announced his departure after the team was eliminated by Portugal in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
Zlatko Dalic will no longer be the coach of the Croatian national team. The Croatian Football Federation has confirmed the end of cooperation with the 59-year-old coach, who led the national team in 111 matches since 2017.
The decision comes after Croatia's elimination by Portugal in the round of 16 of the World Cup. The news was considered unexpected, as Dalic himself admitted that he had considered continuing in the role after the support he had received in recent days.
Under his leadership, Croatia became one of the most competitive teams on the international stage, recording historic results and winning three medals at major tournaments.
In his farewell message, Dalic thanked the Croatian Football Federation, the technical staff, the players, the fans and his family for their support throughout the journey.
" I have always said that there is no greater honor than leading your country's national team. I am proud of every victory, every qualification and the three medals we won together. The support I received in recent days made me reconsider my decision to leave, but the time has come to close this era. I leave with a full heart and I believe that Croatia has a bright future ," Dalic said.
The Croatian coach emphasized that he feels privileged to have worked with an extraordinary generation of footballers, from captain Luka Modric to young talents, while wishing his successor to continue the path of success with the Croatian national team.
According to reports from Croatian media, Dalic's successor will be Croatia legend Slaven Bilic.
Bilic will return to the national team, having managed Croatia from 2006 to 2012.
