Egnatia secured a positive result in the first leg of the first qualifying round of the Champions League, drawing 1-1 away to Petrocub. The Albanian champions held on with one player less for more than half of the game, leaving the race for qualification open, which will be decided in the return match in Rrogozhina.
The match, held at the "Zimbru" stadium, started in the most unfavorable way for the Rrogozhin team. Just a few seconds after the first whistle, a mistake in the back was exploited by Popescu, who took advantage of an incorrect pass from Aleksi to goalkeeper Dajsinani and sent the ball into the net, giving the home team the advantage.
Despite the early goal, Egnatia reacted and took control of the game in search of an equalizer. The Albanian team's efforts were rewarded in the 35th minute, when after a well-constructed action between Haimes and Kryeziu, it was the latter who finished with precision, restoring balance to the score.
In the final minutes of the first half, things got tough for Egnatia. Captain Aleksi was initially shown a yellow card for a tackle in midfield, but after reviewing the incident with the VAR system, the referee overturned the decision and sent him off with a red card, leaving the Albanian team with ten men.
In the second half, Petrocub exerted constant pressure and created several dangerous chances to score. However, goalkeeper Dajsinani was decisive with his saves, keeping the score intact. Egnatia also had opportunities to strike on the counterattack, but failed to convert the created chances.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that is considered favorable for the Albanian champions, considering the course of the match and the numerical inferiority. Now everything will be decided in the return match in Rrogozhina, where Egnatia will aim to use the home field factor to secure qualification for the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
