Granit Xhaka has dismissed speculation about a move away from Sunderland, confirming that he will continue his career at the English club, despite reports of interest from Chelsea and coach Xabi Alonso, with whom he previously worked at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Albanian midfielder made his decision clear after Switzerland's victory over Colombia in the 2026 World Cup, emphasizing that his priority remains family and the project with Sunderland.
" Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy. I have decided to stay where I am. The most important thing is my family. I am ready to make history with them ," Xhaka declared.
Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League last season, securing a place in the Europa League. The club's board were reluctant to let the midfielder, who is considered one of the mainstays of the team, leave. Chelsea, on the other hand, were left out of European competition for the following season.
Xhaka also commented on Switzerland's success in the World Cup, as the Swiss national team secured qualification for the quarterfinals after defeating Colombia on penalties.
" I still can't fully believe what's happening... today is a special day for all of us ," he said.
In the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Switzerland will face the defending champion, Lionel Messi's Argentina.
