Egypt coach Hossam Hassan did not spare any accusations in his press conference after the 3-2 defeat to Argentina, claiming that the match was rigged. Like his players, he expressed strong dissatisfaction with the refereeing and openly accused FIFA of intending to declare Argentina champions again at all costs.
"I will say what I think, regardless of the consequences. This was clearly a rigged match and the whole world saw it. I have another question: if they want Argentina to win so much, then why are they inviting everyone to participate? It's all about money. They want Messi to continue in the tournament. In football, a lot of things happen off the field. What happened was unfair," Hassan declared.
Tensions in the field
The Egyptian camp's discontent began after Lionel Messi's equalizer, when players and staff protested strongly against the referee, claiming that the action was preceded by a foul. The revolt was further intensified after, earlier in the match, an Egyptian goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up phase of the action.
Tensions reached a boiling point in the final minutes of the match when referee François Letexier yellow-carded a member of the Egyptian staff. Shortly afterwards, Hossam Hassan made an "X" gesture with his hands towards the referee. The gesture has been used on various occasions in football and has often been linked to allegations of racist abuse, although it has not been confirmed whether this was the message the Egyptian coach intended to convey.
A similar incident occurred in 2010, when Jose Mourinho, then Inter coach, used a similar gesture towards match officials. The action was interpreted as a symbol of handcuffs and the Portuguese was suspended for three matches.
